Community, Leadership, and Empowerment

Community, Leadership, and Empowerment - Part 1/2

The social success for Muslims lie in a very simple formula. It is a simple formula, but it cannot be achieved by the people who are divided by their personal, ideological and partisan values. The main components of this formula are:

Community - Leadership - Empowerment

Sura 3 - Aal-E-Imran [The Family of Imran] Verse 159-159:

Sura 3 - Aal-E-Imran [The Family of Imran] Verse 159-159:
159. It is part of the Mercy of Allah that thou dost deal gently with them Wert thou severe or harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about thee: so pass over (Their faults), and ask for (Allah's) forgiveness for them; and consult them in affairs (of moment). Then, when thou hast Taken a decision put thy trust in Allah. For Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him).

Sura 4 - An-Nisa [Women] Verse 59-59:

Sura 4 - An-Nisa [Women] Verse 59-59:
59. O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those charged with authority among you. If ye differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if ye do believe in Allah and the Last Day: That is best, and most suitable for final determination.

Sura 3 - Aal-E-Imran [The Family of Imran] Verse 92-92:

Sura 3 - Aal-E-Imran [The Family of Imran] Verse 92-92:
92. By no means shall ye attain righteousness unless ye give (freely) of that which ye love; and whatever ye give, of a truth Allah knoweth it well.

However, there will never be a truly Islamic Community without the establishment of Brotherhood. Similiarly, there will never be any respect for Leadership without Discipline, and finally, we can never arrive at social Empowerment without making great Sacrifices.

This formula is simple enough for every Muslim to understand and implement. It does not require people with great knowledge, or extraordinary faith, i.e., (scholars or extremely pious persons). Scholars and pious people will guide us, but they will not sustain us. We can only be sustained by the implementation of the formula.

Sura 16 - An-Nahl [The Bee] Verse 90-90:

Sura 16 - An-Nahl [The Bee] Verse 90-90:
90. Allah commands justice, the doing of good, and liberality to kith and kin, and He forbids all shameful deeds, and injustice and rebellion: He instructs you, that ye may receive admonition.

Imam Nawawi's Forty Hadith #7
On the authority of Tamim Al-Dari that the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, said:
"Religion is nasihah." We said: "To whom?" The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, said: "To Allah and His Book, and His messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and their common folk."

Imam Nawawi's Forty Hadith #35
Abu Hurairah, radiyallahu 'anhu, reported that the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, said:
"Do not be envious of one another; do not artificially inflate prices against one another; do not hate one another; do not shun one another; and do not undercut one another in business transactions; and be as fellow-brothers and servants of Allah.

A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He neither oppresses him nor humiliates him nor looks down upon him. Piety is here - and he pointed to his chest three times. It is evil enough for a Muslim to hold his brother Muslim in contempt. All things of a Muslim are inviolable for another Muslim: his blood, his property and his honour."

It is a formula that is as simple as having (or collecting) the food and firewood on a camping expedition. Sometimes we become so preoccupied in the sophistication of the journey, that we forget the simple things like the map, the food, the firewood, or the tents! Sometimes, we need to re-evaluate and re-assess our situation and look for what we neglected or overlooked.

Steps we need to take towards Unity and Brotherhood:
Establish genuine relationships with one another.
Meet with each other to discuss critical issues.
Consult with leadership to understand their vision.
Hold meetings to develop a public referendum.
Sponsor a Leadership Summit to address the public referendum.
Adopt persistence and good behaviour to achieve this objective.

Unity and Brotherhood is a critical social responsibility, and we must keep it in our minds throughout all of our activities and ambitions. We should never be known as isolationists and people who look to take. Rather, we must be involved in the affairs of the greater society, and willing to contribute.

Sura 8 - Al-Anfal [Spoils of War, Booty] Verse 24-29:

Sura 8 - Al-Anfal [Spoils of War, Booty] Verse 24-29:
24. O ye who believe! give your response to Allah and His Messenger, when He calleth you to that which will give you life; and know that Allah cometh in between a man and his heart, and that it is He to Whom ye shall (all) be gathered.
25. And fear tumult or oppression, which affecteth not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong: and know that Allah is strict in punishment.
26. Call to mind when ye were a small (band), despised through the land, and afraid that men might despoil and kidnap you; But He provided a safe asylum for you, strengthened you with His aid, and gave you Good things for sustenance: that ye might be grateful.
27. O ye that believe! betray not the trust of Allah and the Messenger, nor misappropriate knowingly things entrusted to you.
28. And know ye that your possessions and your progeny are but a trial; and that it is Allah with Whom lies your highest reward.
29. O ye who believe! if ye fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion (to judge between right and wrong), remove from you (all) evil (that may afflict) you, and forgive you: for Allah is the Lord of grace unbounded.

Sura 8 - Al-Anfal [Spoils of War, Booty] Verse 45-46:

Sura 8 - Al-Anfal [Spoils of War, Booty] Verse 45-46:
45. O ye who believe! When ye meet a force, be firm, and call Allah in remembrance much (and often); that ye may prosper:
46. And obey Allah and His Messenger; and fall into no disputes, lest ye lose heart and your power depart; and be patient and persevering: For Allah is with those who patiently persevere:

Imam Nawawi's Forty Hadith #28
It was narrated on the authority of Abu Najih al-Irbad bin Sariyah, radiyallahu 'anhu, who said:
The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, delivered an admonition that made our hearts fearful and our eyes tearful. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is as if this were a farewell sermon, so advise us." He said, "I enjoin you to have Taqwa of Allah and that you listen and obey, even if a slave is made a ruler over you. He among you who lives long enough will see many differences. So for you is to observe my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly-principled and rightly-guided successors, holding on to them with your molar teeth. Beware of newly-introduced matters, for every innovation (bid'ah) is an error."

Imam Nawawi's Forty Hadith #34
On the authority of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, radiyallahu 'anhu, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, say:
"When any one of you sees anything that is disapproved (of by Allah), let him change it with his hand. If he is not able to do so, then let him change it with his tongue. And if he is not able to do so, then let him change it with his heart, though that is the weakest (kind of) faith."
